While they are incredibly beautiful and unique, opals can be quite sensitive to water, sunlight, humidity, and scratching. Certain types of opals lose their color when wet and change to an amber color over time but you can slow that process by doing the following:
- Remove the piece before you have any contact with water or chemicals
- Remove the piece before partaking in strenuous activity
- Do not use any steam or ultrasonic cleaning
- Do not expose the stone to extreme temperature changes
- Store the piece away from moisture and direct sunlight.
Opals are quite soft and will likely scratch over time, but if you are careful and take good care of it, this stone will delight and amaze for years to come!
