Valentine's Day traces back to the Ancient Roman celebration of Lupercalia, held on February 15, to honor the gods Lupercus and Faunus, and the legendary founders of Rome, Romulus and Remus. After a copious feast, Lupercalia festivities are said to have included the pairing of young men and women. Men drew a woman's name from a box, and each couple would be paired until the following year's celebration.
While the uniting of couples set the tone for Valentine's Day as we know it today, it wasn't labeled Valentine's Day until the days of a priest named Valentine. Valentine, a true romantic, disobeyed Emperor Claudius II's decree that soldiers shall remain bachelors. Claudius believed that soldiers would be distracted and unable to focus on fighting if they were married or engaged. Valentine defied the emperor by secretly performing marriage ceremonies, but as a result of his defiance, Valentine was put to death on February 14.
Following Valentine's death, he was named a Saint. As Christianity spread through Rome, the priests moved the celebration of Lupercalia to February 14 and renamed it St. Valentine's Day in honor of Saint Valentine.
What began as a ceremony of ancient courtship has continued in a more commercial sense. Today men celebrate Valentine's Day "woo-ing" the women they love, buying gifts of heart jewelry, jewelry with sayings, flowers, and aphrodisiacs like chocolate and wine, sending love notes and dining out for a candle-light evening of romance.
