What is Iolite?

A gemstone with a slight variability in chemical composition between stones that exhibits a blue-to-violet range of colors and sometimes shows a brownish streak. On Mohs' scale of hardness, iolite is 7-7.5. It has a greasy luster.

Where can Iolite be found?

Primary sources of Iolite include Burma, Brazil, India, Madagascar, Sri Lanka and the United States.
