May
PRIMARY: EMERALD - "The stone which brings security in love and nature"
Emerald, the primary May birthstone, is a precious gemstone that ranks between 7.5 and 8.0 on Moh's hardness level scale. As mentioned n the aquamarine section, emerald is a green gemstone in the beryl family.
Clear, flawless emeralds are very rare, thus making them very valuable stones. Most emeralds have a number of inclusions and flaws; the most flawed emerald stones are often relabeled as jardin, from the French word for garden.
Alternate: Chrysoprase
Chrysophase, the alternate May birthstone, is an ornamental gemstone with a hardness level between 6.0 and 7.0. A member of the very large chalcedony family, Chrysoprase is an opaque green or yellowish-green with the name stemming from the Greek chrysos meaning gold and prason meaning leek.
